I wonder if my life is actually any richer for owning a computer. Being an avid writer and internet geek, I spend a lot of time gawping at the screen. I can sit down at the PC at 10am, and not look up until “Richard & Judy”. Must curb this addiction.
Rule One: No switching on until I’ve done my chores. I battle through the morning tasks; making important phone calls, completing a job application, organising bills...
But it’s uphill work. There She is on my desk. Waiting for me. Calling me. The silver flat screen gleams sexily next to the matching speakers. Reach for on-button. I must have My Preciousss...
Ok, I’m addicted. I’m on that old treadmill again of having so much time on my hands, I forget how to occupy my mind. The League of Gentlemen describe it far better than I could. “Waking up at 11am, flicking yourself off to Trisha...”
As an attempt to focus on something, I took part in a... wait for it... gay Reiki course! Now what’s the difference between gay Reiki and any other Reiki, I hear you cry? Must one perform the healing hand positions with limp wrists while holding a pink clutch bag? Turns out, much to my relief, that the only reason it was ‘gay’ is because there were other gay men in the room. I spent a beautiful weekend in Brighton learning all about Reiki, and James Philip, the facilitator of the course was extremely welcoming.
For those of you not in the know, Reiki is a Japanese word meaning, Universal
Life Energy, and is used as a great healing source, both for yourself
and for others. Involving the laying on of hands to heal people can
sound a
bit of
an old fish and loaves story, but for the more rationally-minded, we
can simply think of particles of our body that vibrate. Sometimes by
increasing
the vibration
by allowing energy through the hands, we can promote healing.
The short course in Reiki One was a nurturing experience, and it certainly
helped me to feel good, and to focus my energies for a while. I even
perform regular healing on myself, with notable success I may add.
The last year has been a confusing one for me in terms of career. There are many things I am good at, but yet I never seem to make much headway with any project because I don’t really know what I want. The more time I have on my hands, the less I do with that time, and so I continue in the vicious circle.
A new project for me is a twelve-week course of ‘Life Coaching’. Six years ago, content with jigging around the dance-floor, I would never have believed I would be such a good candidate for all these self-help courses. Now I am so grateful for them.
My
Life Coach is a wonderful man called Maurits Kalff, who naturally has the ability
to focus and structure his work. I have explored and arrived at three goals
I would like to attain in my working life, and the purpose of coaching is to
set you on the right path to achieve these goals. As tempting as it was to
choose, ‘Star in four Hollywood Films by end of year’ as one of
them, I was guided well in my choices. I am set a workload for each week, and
already I have achieved a tremendous insight in to what I really want out of
a working life.
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that I’m not lazy or lacking in intelligence, just because sometimes I need a bit of a ‘push’. Some of us have never really learned how to explore life properly. I’m sure there are many others who feel the same.
I don’t think many people in life ever reach their full potential. Hopefully I can manage to tear myself away from the wonders of internet chat rooms to forge ahead with my career. Until such times, there’s always the Trisha show...
