BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS

performance artist Ron Athey

HIV positive performance artist Ron Athey and co-star Dominic Johnson explore self-obliteration, inner pigginess, and mystical grandiosity in an experimental live art performance. Clearly this won’t be for the squeamish, as they often use his body as a canvas for cutting, piercing and mutilation - drawing on his childhood and HIV status as inspiration for his jaw-dropping and often controversial shows. This one, GET IN AT THE START, forms part of the SACRED season at London’s Chelsea Theatre, King’s Road. See this work in progress and ask the performers questions at the Q&A session afterwards. 7-10 November, 8pm.

BOOK CORNER

GAY SEX, GAY HEALTH cover bookIs that bend in your penis normal? How do you deal with coming out? Can you have a relationship when you’re HIV positive? And what is sex addiction? All these questions and more are expertly answered in GAY SEX, GAY HEALTH by Dr Alex Vass. The doc tackles difficult issues like sex, relationships, sexual problems and recreational drug use in a frank and open way that’s easy to understand. His informed but informal style means it’s really like getting the low-down from a clever mate - without the embarrassment of having to ask.

Photographic artist Wolfgang Tilmans has teamed up with HIV i-base and the South African Treatment Action Campaign to produce a glossy report: Why We Must Provide HIV Treatment Information. Launching on World Aids Day, the report features 50 empowering images of global treatment advocates from 25 countries.
These activisits took part in a special treatment literacy meeting in Cape Town looking at new ways of providing treatment information.

The book is being sold to fund i-base’s international advocacy project. £10, plus £2.50 p&p. 020 7407 8488

CHILDREN ribbon

CHILDREN WITH AIDS CHARITY (CWAC)
is marking World Aids Day by supporting the DAGORETTI INTERVENTION FEEDING PROGRAMME in Nairobi, Kenya. Around 150,000 children are reported to be living with HIV in Kenya, while there are more than a million Aids orphans. CWAC’s new initiative, ‘Take A Village Out to Dinner’, aims to feed vulnerable children through sales of special beaded Red Ribbon badges, through donations, and various sponsored events before and around World Aids Day. A £36 donation is enough to take an entire village out to dinner, providing enough food to feed between 50 and 100 children!

WHO GIVES A FUNK ABOUT TRUTH?

playwright Oladipo AgboluajeHard rock, hip-hop, trip-hop, R‘n’B, folk, soul and rock‘n’roll sounds are used alongside text and visuals in GOD IS A DJ, a cool new production by playwright Oladipo Agboluaje. Fusing music, text, visuals and movement, the show looks at how politicians play ‘DJ’ day after day by putting their own spin on the facts. This musical spectacular features input from artists from Nigeria, the US and the UK, and is at London’s Oval House Theatre, Kennington, 29 November till 2 December.

NOT IN OUR BACKYARD?

illustrationWe are well versed in the poor human rights records of many countries when it comes to HIV and Aids. But it is rare for us to turn the spotlight on our own government’s human rights record in this area. The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Aids is preparing to do just that with a human rights audit measuring how far the government’s domestic practice and policies on Aids comply with international law. A similar audit five years ago exposed major failure by the UK government to assess the impact of its laws and policies on people living with or affected by HIV. This influential committee wants to hear from NGOs and individuals before November 15 with a view to starting parliamentary hearings in the New Year.

Visit www.appg-aids.org.uk to contribute or email breskya@parliament.uk for copies of the 2001 audit.

BIG NOISE FOR HIV

BIG NOISE CEILIDH posterAs this year’s GLASGAY arts festival draws to a close, one event not to miss is the BIG NOISE CEILIDH at St Andrew’s in the Square on 10 November. It’s a fun, queer and decidedly alternative punk dance night featuring live musicians and Celtic and Latin-American rhythms. Sheboom, Europe’s largest women’s drumming ensemble and the fabulous Oompah Ceildih Band, provide the music, and the event is staged in support of HIV support and service provider PHACE SCOTLAND.

SAVING FACE

illustrationFacial lipoatrophy (fat loss) is a distressing side effect of HIV and some meds. When lipo strikes, people often turn to face fillers for help and PN has covered this subject extensively the past. But now there is a relatively new kid on the block - Radiesse (Bioform) - a non- surgical procedure that rebuilds facial contours. It is an injectable, biodegradeable implant made of calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a gel.
When injected into the skin with a fine needle, the particles form a ‘scaffold’ or ‘lattice’ in which soft collagen type tissue can grow to create volume and that can last up to two years.
Bio-Alcamid, a gel largely made up of water, is also used medically for facial lipo and has a longer life of five years. A single treatment with Radiesse will set you back £1,500 to £3,000 depending on clients’ needs. Face Shapers is one of the main clinics for these procedures in the UK, with outlets in London and Manchester.
