The play opens when Oscar had begun writing for the Guardian in 1993,
and had changed from being simply HIV positive to a Person With Aids.
His PWA column ran weekly until he died in 1996.
The play's dialogue was written with a dry, tough humour throughout. But
by the end, I did want to hear more than little quips and amusing anecdotes.
Oscar - a likeable man - was in and out of hospital, losing his sight
and gradually sliding towards death.
It provided an interesting glance back to a time when the landscape of
Aids was very different. But the difficulty, for me, is that 1996 is not
long enough ago. Watching it just made me wonder if, and when, the current
'wonder drugs' will begin to fail. Will we all have to go through it again?
