The United Nations and its Secretary General Kofi Annan, 63, have been awarded this year's Nobel Peace award. The Nobel committee cited the UN's "work for a better organised and peaceful world" and Annan's personal work to deal with international terrorism and HIV/Aids. Ghanaian Annan is the first Secretary General from subSaharan Africa.

Thailand to make own drugs
Thailand's state pharmaceutical company has announced that by next year it will make most of the drugs commonly used to treat people with HIV. They hope to supply enough drugs for 50,000 people within three months and 100,000 in a year. The cost of treatments will go down to an average $51 per month.
Dutch docs deal dope
The Netherlands cabinet has approved a move to allow pharmacies to dispense marijuana to patients with cancer, multiple sclerosis and Aids. The country's parliament will now vote on the proposal. The new law will mean that the government

will pay for "pharmaceutical quality" marijuana as long as a doctor prescribes it.
