Sir Elton John accepts the first-ever UK Coalition Hero Award for services to people with HIV at a glittering occasion at London's Dorchester Hotel. The megastar told the positive people in the audience: "You are the real heroes." He praised the staff of his own Elton John Aids Foundation, which has given over £5m to 312 UK organisations since 1993. "More than ever, HIV is a disease of the disadvantaged," he stressed. EJAF is working with UK organisations like the Gay Men's Health Network to combat homophobia in schools, and

has launched a campaign on cable networks MTV and VH1 aimed at drawing attention to rising HIV rates in the USA. 'Aids ain't over', proclaim the ads. Earlier the audience listened to Andy Evans, 24, who has lived since the age of four with

haemophilia, HIV and hepatitis C. "The toll the virus takes is enormous," he said. "The social aspects start well before the symptoms start." The Hero
