Victory at WTO

The recent deal hammered out at a World Trade Organisation (WTO) meeting in Qatar means that poor countries can make cheap generic copies of drugs for HIV.
Drug manufacturers were forced into concessions by a consortium of activists including HIV organisations like ACT-UP Paris and the US Health Gap Coalition, charities like Oxfam, and organisations from developing countries. Brazil's top Aids official, Paulo Teixeira, said: "Our expectations were fully met. Even six months ago, this was unthinkable".
Pharmacist sued over drug error
A Boston man is suing his pharmacy for dispensing the wrong dose of HIV drug indinavir. After taking 200mg instead of 400mg for three weeks Adam Barrett's HIV became resistant and his viral load shot up to 189,000.
Mbeki: end child rape
President Thabo Mbeki used his New Year's message to call on South Africans to stop the spate of rapes of babies and children. "Rapes occur in our homes, they occur amongst relatives," he said: "We must break the silence on this, report wrongdoers and punish these people." Many rapes have been perpetrated by men believing that sex with a virgin will cure them of Aids.
