Dr Steve Cole, lead author of the UCLA report, said: "Our findings
propose that high levels of stress, day in and day out, may eventually
wear down the immune system."
So how do people with HIV deal practically with increased stress from
living with a life-threatening disease and also coping with psychological
side effects from medications, poverty, stigma and discrimination as well?
Some rely on straightforward advice and support from other HIV positive
people. Others use professional psychological and counselling help. Simple
stress-reducing, deep-breathing exercises, visualisations and yoga can
all help, and also having good friends or family around to talk through
fears and worries.
Help is available if you are prepared to ask.
HIV positive people have often shown how possible it is to rebuild shattered
bodies and minds, spirits too.
