He was thrilled with the accolade, but told the HIV positive people in the audience: "You are the real heroes."
Gaby Roslin, host for the evening, introduced speaker Andy Evans, a 24-year old haemophiliac living with HIV and hepatitis C. Andy (with Elton, left) spoke of the social isolation he had experienced since the age of five through living with HIV and of the tremendous support the Elton John Aids Foundation had given him.

Ronan Keating presented Elton with the award, and described how he himself had just returned from a trip to Thailand where he had met families devastated by the disease.
Stephen Bitti, chief executive of the UKC (UK Coalition of People Living with HIV and Aids), explained the reasons behind the award event and how it is the first time ever that positive people and patient groups in the UK have come together to nominate such a Hero.
