Ronan Keating presented Elton
with the award, and described how he himself had just returned from
a trip to Thailand where he had met families devastated by the disease.
Stephen Bitti, chief executive of the UKC (UK Coalition of People Living
with HIV and Aids), explained the reasons behind the award event and how
it is the first time ever that positive people and patient groups in the
UK have come together to nominate such a Hero.
As an after-dinner treat, Alison Moyet crooned for the Steven Berkoff,
Patsy Kensit, Mica Paris, Tara

Palmer-Tomkinson and Cherie Lunghi mixed with many positive people and
HIV charity dignitaries. Companies like MTV, Ivan Massow, and Bates Healthcare
as well as the major pharmaceuticals showed their corporate support.
The event raised £80,000, monies from which will go to further the
HIV support work provided by both London's Globe Centre and the UKC. Thanks
were due to many people for their help in organising the award cermenony,
