HIV.
The PAL helpline will not be able to take on cases beyond the telephone
advice. Instead, other specialist lawyers have agreed to take on referrals
so callers needing ongoing assistance will be offered an appointment.
They can also be given an appointment with advisors for Positive Peer
Advice.
The Positive Advice Peer Advisors (PAPAs) are all trained in welfare issues,
most are HIV positive. They have first-hand personal experience of problems
such as benefit claims or homelessness applications.
This will be a unique service amongst HIV charities. The PAPAs, in addition
to providing telephone advice and assistance, will be able to offer one-to-one
face-to-face appointments and take on cases. The PAPAs are also trained
in advocacy on behalf of positive people. Some have already been working
for the Advocacy Project.
The two limbs of Positive Advice will work closely together. Cross referrals
where appropriate will be encouraged, and mutual training provided. Taken
together, the PAL and the PAPAs will provide a complete package and be
a valuable legal and advice resource to people infected or affected by
HIV.
