The number of people diagnosed with HIV in Britain reached a new high last year.
Latest figures from the Public Health Laboratory Service (PHLS) show 3,342 new HIV cases were diagnosed in 2001, up 17 per cent on the year 2000.
At the same time the PHLS estimates that the number of people diagnosed with HIV in the UK will rise from around 23,000 in 2000 to almost 34,000 by the year 2005, an increase of 47 per cent.
Although homosexual and bisexual men remain the most at risk, the number of new cases among heterosexuals in 2001 exceeded new cases among gay men for the third year in a row.

Condom crisis in capital

There is a now a shortage of free condoms in London with health authorities only funding four free condoms for each gay man a year.
Over 1.2 million 'Freedom' condom packs are distributed to over 150 venues in the capital each year, but many visitors to popular West End bars and clubs are now not able to get them.
The 'Freedoms' contract is funded by 13 health authorities in the capital.

Mark Maguire, of Camden and Islington Health Promotion Service, said that
