Source of HIV still a mystery
A study of chimpanzees in Africa has failed to find the virus thought to be HIV's ancestor. Researchers found only one animal, a healthy 23-year old male, with the SIV-cpz virus, thought to have 'jumped species' to humans some time around 1930. But he was in Tanzania, further east than the area thought to be the 'cradle' of HIV, and his SIV was so genetically different it could not possibly have given rise to HIV.
