This is difficult. It requires money. Due to his present immigration
status, he is not allowed to work. The Home Office is taking a painfully
long time to decide his case. Sam's energy is running low.
But at least Sam has access to healthcare. It is no secret that many immigrants
refuse to access health services for fear of being deported. It's also
no secret that many of the Africans living with HIV in London are
asylum seekers.
Regardless of what anyone thinks, the truth of the matter is that the
UK has benefited much more from immigrants than the other way round. In
fact, Britain now prides itself on being a multi-cultural society. Immigrants'
contribution to both cultural development and the world's wealth cannot
be overestimated. Some of the richest people in this country are people
from cultures still regarded by many with suspicion.
Isn't it time we started to welcome diversity in this country instead
of shutting it off at the door?
