program began in the Basque Country Basauri prison in 1997.
This change has now spread to many Spanish prisons. There are now more
than 10 centres offering needle dispensation and exchange, cotton wool,
alcohol, condoms and above all information. Which was why I was walking
through the gates of La Model one day, under the wardens' glares. Information
works, despite the prison warders seeing it as a threat to their security.
In this, I believe that my country can truly be a model.
