"As an organisation, THT has to be big enough to campaign nationally
and be listened to, but also small enough to address the different needs
of different communities. THT is doing a lot of things extremely well
but it does wrestle with its identity. A lot of gay men think that THT
is moving too far towards the Africans, but a lot of Africans think it
hasn't moved far enough and is still a middle-class gay organisation.
These tensions are not new, but we have to tread a path that is inclusive
and not tokenistic.
"I think THT will certainly survive to be 40. We all hope to be out
of jobs because the epidemic will be under control. But until society
wakes up and addresses the issues of the marginalised and disadvantaged
it will not go away. The sticking plaster approach simply doesn't work."
