Seven out of 10 HIV positive PosNation readers take anti-HIV medication, though a surprisingly high one in 10 have taken it in the past but currently do not. Women are just as likely to take treatments as men, but white women somewhat less so.

nucleosides nevirapine and efavirenz are now more popular than the protease inhibitors (PIs). If you take ritonavir away from the PIs (because it is nearly always used as a 'booster' these days and not in its own right), it appears that only one in eight are taking a PI as an active ingredient in their combo therapy.
Only a third as many people take either nelfinavir or indinavir as did in 1999. Already more take the new drug tenofovir than indinavir. Doctor and patient decisions seem to be being guided partly by actual or reputed toxicity, but more especially by ease of adherence.
