The great F*** debate

Hope Mhereza (letters, PN June) threatens to stop reading Positive Nation if her sensibilities are assailed by four-letter words. Screw, fuck etc. are simply ancient and valid alternatives to copulate, have sex, and so on. I hope she is not hiding a bigoted distaste for gay sex.

I agree with Hope Mhereza about the GMFA advert on the back cover of the May 2002 issue. I had a couple of conversations with women about it and we agreed with what Hope said. I recognise it must be difficult to produce a magazine in the interests of all the communities affected by HIV; however, some thought and sensitivity is needed in relation to the placing of adverts and inserts.

Positive Nation regrets it cannot send inserts only to specific subscribers - ed.

I photocopied the GMFA 'Head Fuck' back cover of PN's May issue and stuck two of them on the notice board behind my desk. It is a very catchy piece and the message is useful, and not just to gay men. There are times when this heterosexual African man feels fucked up too, and sometimes we need the words to express that.

I took exception to your statement about the USA 'having exported HIV around the world' in your 'Holidays' article (PN May). Let's just remember that there is no consensus on where HIV originated.
