New optimism in Bournemouth
Dr Elbushra Herieka has been appointed as the new HIV consultant at the
Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospital. Dr Herieka, formally consultant
at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, has promised that he will listen to
and address complaints recently aired in this magazine about the poor
quality of service for HIV positive patients in the area.
Helpline jammed after NHS scare
An NHS helpline has received more than 260 worried calls after a medical
worker at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospital Trust was found to be HIV positive.
The trust sent out 500 letters to patients but is barred from revealing
the name or place of work of the medic for legal reasons. There has yet
to be a proven case where HIV has been transmitted from medical staff
to any patient in the UK and no patient has transmitted the virus to a
doctor or nurse, despite many needle-stick injuries in this country.
Review of GUM and HIV services
The Parliamentary Health Select Committee is set to review GUM and HIV
services in July and again in September and October. Dr Anton Pozniak,
a consultant at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, has called on doctors
and healthcare workers to submit evidence to the committee as soon as
