Ireland is heading for an HIV crisis among heterosexual men and women, according to the National Disease Surveillance Centre (NDSC). Dr Mary Cronin blamed alcohol abuse as a major factor: "It causes uninhibited behaviour and safe sex is often the last thing on people's minds."

Complacency about sexual health and condom use is putting older people at greater risk of Aids, researchers in Australia have reported. A survey of 2,650 people aged over 50 found that almost half the women and more than a third of men never used condoms. The research mirrors recent studies in the US which found that rates of HIV infection among older people were increasing, while youth infection rates were falling.
