One in five gay men in London have been infected with hepatitis B (HBV), and worldwide, HBV is the sixth-biggest cause of death and the second-biggest cause of cancer after tobacco.
Yet one in three gay Londoners could not name HBV as a sexually transmitted disease. The virus is usually spread through oral or anal sex, through medical and tattoo needles, or even by sharing toothbrushes or razors, and is 100 times more infectious than HIV.
Unlike HIV, however, hepatitis B has an effective vaccine. The UK Government HIV and sexual health strategy aims to have 70 per cent of vulnerable groups vaccinated for hepatitis B by the end of 2006.
