inhibitor atazanavir for marketing approval by the European Medicines
Evaluation Agency (EMEA). Atazanavir is currently in phase III clinical
development, and if the EMEA grant approval, it should be available for
general prescription by early autumn. Atazanavir, whose brand name is
Zrivada, is the first PI that does not raise lipids (fats) in the blood.
It can be taken once daily.
Once daily 'rit/saq'
Another potential once-daily PI duo is the combination of saquinavir with
ritonavir. A team of researchers has been testing a combination of the
soft-gel formulation of saquinavir and ritonavir - both taken just once
daily. After six months of a trial, 93 per cent of drug-naïve subjects
taking this combination together with two nucleoside drugs had undetectable
viral loads.
