Keep on trucking
A successful HIV prevention campaign with Indian truck-drivers was revealed in Barcelona. Madhu Bala Nath, who has been an Asian gender adviser for many years, said the initiative had run from 1995-1999. "We did a lot of prevention work with truck drivers in certain high HIV-risk regions around Delhi. We went to roadside cafés distributing condoms and information. We wondered why we were attracting so much attention. We found out later that several trucks had their bonnets open and the drivers were using condoms as radiator insulators. The truck drivers also said 'Every three to four hours we must stop to have sex.' Our work continues to break myths and stereotypes around gender issues in India."
