You also have the problem of explaining to a desperate population that trial vaccines are not a cure, nor, conversely, will cause HIV infection: fears that the first
African preventive vaccine trial, in Uganda, has already
had to deal with.
Vaccines are never going to be as profitable as drugs, and are expensive
to develop. Saul Walker, IAVI's European Policy Co-ordinator, commented:
"It's taken 10 -15 years for any kind of uptake of the hepatitis
B vaccine in developing countries".
