St Thomas's genito-urinary (GU) consultant Caroline Bradbeer said that last year her south London clinic saw 200 cases of gonorrhoea in Caribbean 20-24 year olds, compared with about 40 each in white and black African people. Dr Bradbeer was speaking on the 20th anniversary of Terrence Higgins' death (see news). She added: "St Thomas's GU clinic was built in 1976 to cater for 9,000 cases a year. Last year, we saw 35,000." 'PIs will be finished in five years' The protease inhibitor class of anti-HIV drugs will be "finished" in less than five years because of severe toxicities, according to Dr Robert Gallo of Baltimore University. Dr Gallo, who until last year claimed to be the co-discoverer of HIV, told the conference that the way forward for treatment was new classes of drugs, such as entry inhibitors, vaccines and using natural HIV suppressors such as chemokines, which can block HIV infection. |
