Health education workers in the US are now planning a condom campaign aimed at older people, provocatively entitled: 'Now you can get it up, get it on'.
The CDC says the problem is particularly bad in parts of Florida and highlights Dade County, which covers the city of Miami. Here almost 20 per cent of people with Aids are senior citizens. One in five men and nearly half the women over 50 in Florida with Aids are known to have been infected through heterosexual sex. These numbers are predicted to grow as the wealthy 'baby boom' generation ages.
Older gays and bisexuals are also at risk, the CDC says, and seniors are much more likely to be diagnosed with HIV later and sicker than younger people.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan welcomed two of the world's top soccer teams to New York last month and thanked them for agreeing to play an exhibition match to help fight Aids. Real Madrid and Roma drew 0-0 after an intense game in front of 70,000 fans at the Giants Stadium. "One can just imagine a sick person, in hospital, infected with Aids, seeing young healthy, dynamic players at the height of their game, playing in solidarity with them - the encouragement that gives them is quite extraordinary." Annan told the players: "You are not only giving of yourself and your time but you are also making a financial contribution which is extremely appreciated and will be put to good use helping these sick people." Proceeds from the game will go to the United Nations Global Campaign to fight HIV and Aids.
