If it can do all this it will hopefully spark off a 'health
culture' among HIV-affected Africans.
The scheme will be available at several different leisure centres in Lewisham,
Southwark and Lambeth. To join all you need to do is phone UAAF and register
with the health initiative worker, who will prepare you for an induction.
They'll ask you to get a letter of consent and recommendation from your
doctor or GP on what exercises you should undertake.
Activities under the scheme include aerobics, bodybuilding, weight lifting,
swimming, football, basketball, relaxation exercises, karate, sauna, biking,
tennis and loads more.
I really encourage you to join. Why? Well, today there is a growing emphasis
on looking good, feeling good and living longer. Lots more men - yes even
straight African men - spend time on their dress and some even carry little
face mirrors in their pockets or bags (you know who you are!). Well, one
of the keys to achieving these ideals is fitness and exercise.
And feeling good about yourself physically can also be a very empowering
thing.
You can use the SLAHI fitness scheme in various ways. You may prefer to
learn the basics on the course and then work out more seriously in your
own time and place. For example, stretches and squats can easily be done
at home once you have been coached on how to exercise the right way, by
professionals. At a later stage when you feel confident enough, you might
prefer working out at a more local fitness centre. Or perhaps, when personal
finances permit, you can buy equipment to install at home.
As for me? Well, I'm leaving you now to go horse riding to try and improve
on my bum appearance. It's shrunk lately due to lack of serious exercise.
Giddy up!
