Today there are 230,000 Russians with HIV. Anti-viral treatment is not yet
a realistic option in Russia and because over 80% of new infections are still
related to intravenous drugs, syringe exchanges combined with education remain
a primary method of HIV intervention.
John Ranard has been photographing intravenous drug use and its
connection with HIV in Russia and Ukraine since 1996. This recent
work was sponsored by the Open Society Institute and Imperial College,
London.
