Over 250 mourners attended a packed and emotional funeral at Lambeth Crematorium on 30th May to celebrate the life of Jeff Akers.

Jeff was a much loved and respected volunteer and trustee of the UK Coalition of People Living with HIV and Aids (UKC) for many years until the charity closed last summer.

He specialised in giving straight forward and amusing talks to employers and trade unions around the country about living with the virus and the problems for HIV positive people in the workplace.
Jeff died in a public toilet at Walton on Thames on Tuesday afternoon 19th February. A post mortem showed he died from a single stab wound to the back.

An unemployed man, 29-year-old Mark Malone, has been remanded in custody and will appear at the Old Bailey this autumn to face murder charges.

Jeff’s funeral was attended by members of his distraught family, friends and former colleagues as well as his partner Michael, of more than 20 years.

So many mourners were present at the funeral that the tiny chapel was filled to overflowing.

Jeff will be remembered throughout the UK HIV sector for his love, humour and dedication. He will be sadly missed by all.
